The Erasmus Packing Guide: 10 Things You Can’t Forget

Hey there, future Erasmus adventurer! If you're gearing up for your study abroad experience in Poland, you’re probably feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. As you prepare to dive into a new culture, meet new people, and tackle academic challenges, one thing that can make or break your experience is your packing game. Packing smart isn’t just about fitting everything into your suitcase; it's about making sure you’ve got what you need to feel comfortable in a new environment. So, let’s get started with the ultimate Erasmus packing guide because your next adventure starts with what you bring along.

Important Documents

Packing your documents may not be as exciting as stuffing your suitcase with cool outfits, but trust me—this is the most important part of your Erasmus journey. These little pieces of paper are your golden tickets to a smooth stay in Poland. Let’s break down the essentials you absolutely can’t forget:

Passport & ID

First things first make sure your passport and ID are up-to-date and won’t expire while you’re abroad. There’s nothing worse than scrambling to renew them last minute! Consider making several copies (both physical and digital) of your passport and ID, just in case they get lost or stolen. Keep these copies in different places one in your luggage, one with a friend or relative, and one on your phone. This simple step can save you a major headache if the unexpected happens.

Erasmus Forms

Don’t leave home without the paperwork that proves you're an official Erasmus student! You’ll need to carry your acceptance letter, grant agreement, and any other documents your university or the Erasmus office provided. These forms are crucial for things like registering at your host institution or confirming your Erasmus grant. Store them in a folder or a document wallet to keep them safe and organized.

Insurance Documents

No one wants to think about accidents or getting sick, but having the right insurance documents can be a lifesaver literally. Before leaving, make sure you have proof of health and travel insurance. Double-check that your policy covers you for medical emergencies, accidents, and any travel disruptions while you're in Poland (or traveling around Europe). It’s also a good idea to have a digital copy saved in your email or cloud storage for quick access. Don't know which insurance you should choose? We prepared for you the best option - By investing 48 zł your insurance company covers the cost of 50,000 thousand zlotys! In case of any damage, your costs will be covered by insurance for 365 days a year.

 Power Adapter

Since Poland uses European plug types C and E, it’s crucial to bring the right power adapter for your devices. If you're traveling beyond Poland, consider investing in a universal adapter that works across multiple countries in Europe. This small gadget will keep your laptop, phone, and other electronics charged and ready, no matter where you go.

Extension Cable

An extension cable can be a lifesaver, especially in shared accommodations where outlets might be limited. It allows you to charge multiple devices at once in one convenient spot. Just ensure it’s compatible with Poland’s power outlets (types C and E) to avoid any surprises when you plug in! If you want to be prepared in advance, it is worth ordering an extension cable online.

If your space in the suitcase is limited, do not worry, in every Polish household accessories store like Media Expert, you will definitely find a suitable extension cable at a good price :)

PowerBank

A portable charger is essential for keeping your phone and other devices powered up while you're on the go. Whether you're navigating new cities or snapping photos, you’ll want to ensure your battery doesn’t die halfway through the day. Choose one that has enough capacity to last through long trips.

Medication

If you need to take medication on a regular basis, remember to bring a supply for at least 5 months. During your Erasmus exchange, you are not likely to return home, and certainly not to get a prescription for a medication you forgot to take with you! It is important that you feel safe and that you have a reserve of the necessary medication with you. You can find all other typical medicines, such as cold medicines, and painkillers, in Polish pharmacies. The choice is really wide so you do not have to worry.

Reusable Water Bottle

Bringing a reusable water bottle is both eco-friendly and cost-effective. Not only will you help reduce plastic waste, but you'll also save money by avoiding the constant need to buy bottled water. Plus, it keeps you hydrated during long days exploring new cities or attending classes. Remember to drink a minimum of 2 liters of water a day, stay hydrated!

Comfortable Shoes

You’ll be doing a lot of exploring in new cities, so comfortable shoes are a must. Packing the right pair ensures you’ll enjoy your adventures without aching feet. Walking is the best way to discover the city. In Poland, you walk a lot, regardless of the weather. If you are coming for the winter semester - remember to bring warm boots, although some people cope by using sneakers, I don't recommend that if you don't want to get frostbite ;). If you arrive in the summer semester - Birkenstocks and breathable shoes are a necessity!

Backpack

A backpack or daypack is a versatile must-have. It’s perfect for day trips, allowing you to carry essentials like snacks, a water bottle, and a camera. Additionally, it's convenient for university life - use it to haul books, notebooks, and any other school supplies you need throughout the day. I also encourage you to bring a backpack that will come in handy for walking in the mountains. In Poland, you will find many magnificent peaks, which are worth visiting during a weekend trip.

Bed linen & Towels

These two things are the foundation for a comfortable stay in your new student room. Bed linen and the sheets are not usually included in the rental room supply, that's why its the best to bring your own. Take your favorite bedding with you to make your sleep more comfy.

A lightweight, quick-drying travel towel is a handy addition to your packing list. It’s perfect not only for personal use, like showers or gym sessions but also for quick clean-ups during your travels. Its compact size makes it easy to pack, and you'll be glad to have it when you need it!

Analogue Camera

Capture your Erasmus memories with a nostalgic twist by bringing an analogue camera. It’s a fun way to document your experience, and the unique charm of film photos will make your memories stand out. Don’t forget to pack enough film for your stay. You can also buy film locally in Poland in Empik stores to keep snapping throughout your adventure.

Packing smart is key to a smooth and enjoyable Erasmus experience. By remembering these essentials important documents, electronic devices, comfortable clothing, and travel-friendly accessories you’ll be well-prepared for life in Poland. Keep your load light but practical, and always check the weather and any local requirements before you go. With these packing tips in mind, you’re ready to make the most of your Erasmus adventure!
